NEWS: Bill Gates now biggest landowner in America

World’s b iggest philanthropist, Bill Gates and one of the world’s richest has earned a new title: he is the biggest landowner in the U.S. The Microsoft’s co-founder and his wife Melinda have been named the top owners of US farmland, having acq uired 242,000 acres (almost 1,000 square kilometres) across more than a dozen states. According to The Land Report, their largest holdings are in Louisiana, where the couple has 69,071 acres and Arkansas 47,927 acres. The couple also holds 20, 588 acres in Nebraska, 25,750 acres in Arizona. and 16,097 in Washington state, the couple’s home state. Land Report magazine reported that the Gates family began acquiring land in the 90s, as part of plans to diversify assets. The couple acquired then more than 100,000 acres of farmland across the US. NEWS: Joe Biden appoints another Nigerian into his cabinet

Joe Biden, the President-elect of the United States of America, has appointed Nigerian-born Funmi Olorunnipa Badejo into his cabinet. The President-elect made announcement when he named additional 20 members of the office of the White House counsel. Badejo is a lawyer and an alumna of Berkeley Law College in the US, and served as ethics counsel in the same office toward the end of the President Barrack Obama administration. She, alongside other lawyers of the Office of White House Counsel will be advising the President, the executive office of the president, and the White House staff on legal issues pertaining to the president and the White House. Murder: Court Martial sentences soldier to death by firing squad

The court-martial sitting in Maiduguri, Borno State capital has sentenced Trooper Azunna Maduabuchi to death by firing squad for killing the adjutant of his unit, one Lieutenant Babakaka Ngorgi. Trooper Maduabuchi was arraigned for murder after shooting Lieutenant Ngorgi in July 2020 at close range in Bama Local Government of Borno State for refusing to grant him a welfare pass. He was on Tuesday sentenced to death by firing squad after he was found guilty at the court session held at the Maimalari Cantonment, Maiduguri. Some other four soldiers were arraigned for manslaughter and sentenced to various years of imprisonment. One of the soldiers Sergeant Sani Ishaya was sentenced to four years, Bidemi Fabiyi sentenced to two years while Private Musa Bala and Private Abdulraheed Adamu were sentenced to one-year imprisonment each.

NEWS: Black Saturday: Fire kills ten newborn babies in Indian hospital

Ten newborn babies died on Saturday in a fire at a state-run hospital in western India, officials said. There were 17 infants in the unit for sick newborn babies when the fire broke out in the early hours of Saturday at the Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra state. Seven infants died due to smoke suffocation, and three from burn injuries, Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope told reporters. Seven babies were rescued by the nurses and ward staff. All the infants were aged between a few days and three months, Bhandara district health official Prashant Uike said. The government has ordered a probe into the incident and a safety audit of all neo-natal care units in the state. Initial reports indicated that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit in one of the incubators, Tope said. “The staff said the ward quickly filled with lots of black smoke,” the minister added.
